The haunted house

“Fool,” the man said to himself. “That’s exactly what they want. They want you to be white with fear. Theay expect you to run out of this room before the night over. Make sure no one is playing a trick on you. Chek the whole place.”

First he checked the windows to see whether they were really close. He looked into the cupboards, on top of the wardrobe, under the bed - not a trace of anything suspicious anywhere. He felt much safer after that, but as a final precaution he locked the door from the inside, stuffed the keyhole with paper, and pushed the heavy dressing table against the door.

Once he was in bed he surveyed the haunted room. All was well: it was just an ordinary room. He put the key under the pillow, tirned off the bed lamp and pulled the bedclothes around him. He was now in the darkness, exhausted but happy.

“Good”, whispered a voice at his ear. “We don’t want them to disturb us, do we?”
