John was seated near the table, in his pajamas; he was busy cutting down some cld fruit tins to turn them into water pots for the birds, and he was absorbed in his work. I was just putting the finishing touches to my toilet when I saw something move in the shadows beneath his chair. Putting on my dressing-gown I went closer to see what it was. There on the floor, about six inches away from John's bare feet, lay a big snake. I had always believed, judging by what I had read and was told, that at moments like this one should speak quietly to the victim, in order to avoid panic and sudden movement. So, clearing my throat, I spoke, calmly and gently: "Keep quite still, old boy, there's a snake under your chair."
The writer warned John...
to stand up immediately.
not to move from where he was.
to clear his throat and be calm.
to speak gently to the victim.
